ART TOPPLING tobacco has been thinking about tobacco use in the movies.

30-Jan-2011 Realisation came when re reading  "Jasper Jones "  successful Australian novel by Craig Silvey , that is being made into a movie, that at least 20 times there appears descriptions of Jasper  lighting up a cigarette.  Movie screens HAVE TO HAVE a statement at the beginning and ending of screening , that says   "CIGARETTE smoking in this film is in AN HISTORICAL context  and is important to portray character.   We acknowledge that cigarette smoking is highly addictive , causes many cancers,  emphysema and death."

It should not be done blandly but with a cute little jumping dot that captures the audience.

Note too that  "Jasper Jones "  has underage drinking , so there is responsibility for that .  Jasper is certainly on the road to addiction  to alcohol and nicotine.

Note again  What about the actors ?  ( US movies state at the beginning that   " No animal was harmed in the making of this film " )  Human animals  need protection.  Is there a way of making the smoking on screen fake  so actors are protected.

this is a radical marvellous idea which it is amazing no one has thought about before. the artistic symbolism in movies is so powerful. it cannot be an accident that the sexy most attractive characters are often the smokers.

I think such comments at the end of a film containing smoking is a good idea. I am aware that many actors smoke 'fake' or herbal cigarettes for filming smoking scenes - for example, I read an interview where Sarah Jessica Parker said she smoked fake, herbal cigarettes when her character Carrie was supposed to be smoking her Marlborough Lights in Sex In The City, Maybe films should state at the end that any smoking was simulated and no actors were harmed!
