Impact of A Movie

I’m asking for you to watch the movie ‘Now Voyager” (1942) and “Easy Virtue” (2008) , 66 years apart but still advertising for the tobacco industry. The extract below shows the impact of “Now Voyager” with one character, a teenager, Margaret totally influenced by the love scenes with the cigarette; the other teenager, main character Kathy sees the movie as providing a solution for mental illness.

Both movies are one big teaching sessions for  the vulnerable girl seeking images around which she can establish her own ego.

Below is an extract from memoir “A Thing About Chimneys” by Janet Thomson. Chimneys being a metaphor for what a smoker does to his/her nose and this part of the novel illustrates the impact of a movie on vulnerable girls.
